I am in folders adding docs and so forth and a every so often Windows resorts the folder by name.
This disrupts what I am doing since all the new documents I just added are not at the bottom but now reshuffled making it very hard to know where I am in what ever I’m doing.

Can this be shut off so only a forced re-sort is possible like in XP?

Are you meaning the auto refresh that Windows Explorer does?
Which is pretty damned annoying especially when you are in the middle of renaming a file.

And the answer is ... You can't!!!!

What? That's unusual since eveything else I loathe about 7 versus XP "can" be changed.

I'm not going to load another file manager? although back in the DOS days I used X-tree I remember?

Click on Organize/ Layout/ and select the Menu Bar. When you have the Menu Bar go to View/ Sort by, and there you can set the order to "Date Modified" or whatever other option you like.
