how to trim pattern tiles

I'm making a pattern tile of horizontal lines. I made a line, move/copied it across a 1" box. How can I get rid of the parts of the lines overhanging the edges, so this will go in my palette? (I'm new at this - any help much appreciated!)

...crop tool may help out, in the path finder window...

...select the box, ensure it is on top and the lines underneath, select the line and hit the crop option...
