Without using any third party s/w, is it possible to setup an NT server to trigger an alert to send a message to my desktop when a specific event number appears in the Event Viewer?
In Server Manager I already have my UID and ComputerName listed in the Alerts list, but how do you create events or threshholds to trigger alerts?
Is this an SNMP function? Do I need to load the SNMP Agent on the server in question? [tt]Be a lateral thinker![/tt]

In the context of NT, yes it's possible as long as you know what is the cause of any event being logged in the Event Viewer.

Administrative alerts will only tell you about the general system generated errors and warnings. If you want custom alerts by setting thresholds on certain system objects, you'll have to use Performance Monitor. PM alerts can be generated from a server suspected of having a performance problem or from any other machine on the network that can view that server's performance counters. Second option is recommended since monitoring puts mild strain on the server itself.

SNMP is Simple, not Sophisticated. Though a standard for monitoring systems and a host of networking and power equipment it relies on TCP/IP trap messages. PM in contrast is a lot sophisticated and customizable. How you use PM depends on your creativity. Think out of the box!

I hope this points you in the right direction. Mubashir
