Does anyone know an easy way to upgrade or transfer one of my Microsoft SQL 6.5 databases to SQL 7.0? I originally installed 6.5 and the database works fine. I installed SQL 7.0 and ran the “Upgrade Database Wizard”. However, it fails half way through the process because it says “Login Failed” to the SQL server. I have checked my passwords and I have even reset them to make sure they are correct. Even though I do get the error during the upgrade, I am able to open up SQL 7.0 successfully but it did not transfer my 6.5 database.

I have very little experience with 7.0, and none with 6.5, but you may want to try to backup the database on the 6.5 server, and then restore that backup on the 7.0 server.

Hope This Helps!

Don't just check the logins/passwords. How about the PERMISSIONS? Do you have the proper permission to upgrade the database?

I wasn’t sure if I could restore a 6.5 database to a 7.0 install without converting/upgrading it first?

Also, where do I need to check the permissions for upgrading the 6.5 database to 7.0?

Do you have sysadmin privileges or just basic user privileges? Are you the owner of the database?

I don't use 6.5 or 7 so I'm just guessing as to what the trouble might be.

The password is not the problem. I believe what you have run into is the type of administrator account that you are using is not appropriate for the conversion.

The service startup account for the MSSQLServer service startup account for both SQL Server instances involved in the upgrade must be a domain account that is a member of the local Administrators group on both computers. Also, the account that you use to log in to the SQL Server 7.0 or SQL Server 2000 server to run the Upgrade Wizard utility must be an administrator on the computer that is running SQL Server 6.5.

for more information here is a link.

If this is not the problem, can you provide us more info on when exactly the conversion is failing? or if there is any more info in the error msg.
