We have an existing win2k domain that was set up without
forest or tree capability. We've installed Exchange 2000
on a test box and we want to test out email. Since we
can't make a subdomain for testing purposes, is it
possible to run both our official company mail in the same
domain as the test exchange email server?

the "without forest or tree capability" makes no sense. As soon as you install Active directory (to create a domain), you automatically create a new forest.

Anyway, you should really set up Exchange in the production forest if you want to create mailboxes for those users. Otherwise you have 2 separate forests, and you'd have to create the users all over again.
