Our system is supposed to be using Windows Backup to backup W2K Server from two servers to a NAS device. I'm new at this, and in my three big fat books about W2K Server administration I can't find much about how to test a backup. One book says that the only way to definitively test a backup is to do a test restore. I don't have a test server available so that's out for now. Can anyone suggest an intermediate step between untested backup and a dedicated test environment?

Duh okay I guess that's what the "verify" switch is for. Thanks everybody, heh. :0

The verify function doesn't test the restorabity of your backup, rather it only verifies that it wrote the selected files correctly.

The only way to properly test a backup is to do a test restore. We test our servers at a convenient time by taking them down, disconnecting the existing hard drive subsystem, installing a cheap IDE drive and performing a restore. Once completed, we swap back to the original drives and put the server back on line.
