I think I might have a bad hub. This is why I may not be able to network my 2 pc's together. I have a cable modem hooked up to one pc. When I plug the cable modem into my hub and then to my pc...no connection. I only get the pc light on my modem to show green when I plug it into the uplink port. Yet I am unable to ping my gateway. Would I need a cross-over cable to plug my modem into my hub? or is that what the uplink port is for?

Anybody know of a way to test a hub?
thanks

If all you had before was a cable between Modem and PC it was probably a crossover. If you have a uplink port on the hub than you can plug the cable into uplink port. Note some hubs have a switch to set uplink port from normal to uplink, while others have two ports.

With the switch you can switch to see which one turns to green when cable is plugged in.

When you plug a straight thru cable to hub form pc into a normal port, you should get a green light on hub.

What type of PC's are you trung to network ?
