Hi,

I am installing a search engine on my website and the instructions say that I have to set permissions using TELNET and setperms.bat file given with the files. There is also a setperms.sh to be used on UNIX servers.

My servers is UNIX (there is something APACHE?!? It's hosted on
What is this exactly?

I went to a command prompt and typed TELNET <My IP> and I got:

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Firstly, your Hosting Company needs to allow you to Telnet to them. A lot do not allow this - they only provide FTP access. Check with your Hosting Support.

The BAT file is for a NT/2000/XP system (.BAT - batch file). The SH file is for Unix/Linux (.SH - shell script file).

You may have to ask your Hosting Company to install the files for you - which could be an additional cost.

Alternatively, open the "setperms.sh" (or setperms.bat) into a text editor (TextPad or the like) and see what's in it. If there are only a couple of file permission changes (probably using the CHMOD command) you can probably do this manually using an FTP application for Windows.

I use FTP-Voyager (Commercial), but there are plenty of Shareware/Freeware applications around - SmartFTP, WS FTP Pro, LeechFTP.

Code:

has an example for Unix on it.

Hi thanks.

I checked with my provides but they do not allow to telnet to their servers...security reasons I guess!

Anyway, I chmod manually.

Thanks
