How can I tell the kernal version of a LINUX machine? How about the glibc version? anyone know? James Collins

It's just a command line pipe through an awk text filter
(like dos c:\dir /w | more) The command: ldd --version
will give you the info you want: the full
command above will pretty print it to terminal for you.

There are some excellent books out there for people starting
out with linux: I would pick up one of the SAMS books for
your distribution and start there. That way you can work
and learn at the same time.
