I am using an SQL 2005 system.I recently got a new backup server. Last month it took me a couple of days to copy my existing database onto the backup server. I did have a problem copying one database which was 85G. My boss tasked my with keeping the production server in sync with the test server. I know my boss was talking about the data but I am also interested in keeping the stored procedures in sync if this is possible. Data only gets entered into the system during the first ten days of the month so I only need the syncing to occur once a day during the first ten days of the month. Is it possible to do this or do I just use the backups from the production server?

I haven't set up replication or syncing, but you just set up synching the way you know it, it will only sync in the case there is something to sync. So the fact new data only arrives 10 days each month means there only is syncing during that time, doesn't it? So there is nothing special to do about this, is there? Just set up permanent syncing.

Perhaps you only want to sync over night? It doesn't make sense to keep a test database in sync all the time, if you want to do stage testing of new application versions with new database versions, the test should start from a copy of production, for sure, but it will then start to deviate, wouldn't it? Maybe rethink the concept?

If you keep the backup server as fallback and high-availability solution, then transactional replication would be a good thing to do.

Bye, Olaf.

After giving the syncing idea some more thought I decided against it. I am going to keep the data on the test server in sync by doing restores. Thanks for your help.
