I want to add an image (employee photo) to an image table in a blob field. What are the basics I need to know to get images into and out fo blob fields in Developer 6i? I looked through the Developer Forms online documentation and I found absolutely nothing about it other than a definition of lob and blob. Thanks for any suggestions

You may read about READ_IMAGE_FILE and WRITE_IMAGE_FILE bult-ins Regards, Dima

I did finally get the read_image to work, but I had to modify the blob field I had and change it to a long raw. Everything I have read has suggested that Oracle is recommending using BLOBs rather than long raws, but when I created the table with a blob field, sqlplus and TOAD complained and refused to allow me to select on the table. I went back to the long raw and everything works as its supposed to. Does anyone have the straight info on long raws vs blobs and why my 9i database and tools would not allow me to use a blob?

thanks for any suggestions..

There're a number of advantages in using blobs: you may store blob outside the main table; you may create a table with more than 1 blob fields; you may perform a number of other operations not available with long raw.
I do not think ther's any reason to select BLOB data in sql*plus, because it's used mostly for viewing data. Can you process binary data in your head? :). Regards, Dima

no, I guess you're right, but when I do a select * Id rather have Oracle not complain that the table contains illegal somethings... or some other wierd message that leads me to believe there is some terrible structural disaster...<G> a nice <image> placeholder would be great but not just a total refusal to function and messages that indicate the world is coming to an end...<G>
