How to Stop Username Prompt in Office 2007

Suddenly, without any seeming change, everytime I open a MS Word or Excel 2007 document, I get the USER NAME prompt for Name and Initials. After I click OK, the document opens. I have looked for a setting to turn off this nag screen and I have researched the issue.

When I go to the place in the registry where there is User info, I am unable to change permissions AND I am even unable to open the string! There is a prompt saying I do not have permission to open the registry there.

Please, can someone help me. I am an advanced user but unfamiliar with HEX codes, etc. and don't know how to fix this issue. I reinstalled Office over the installation and this did not fix the issue. Would completely uninstalling the program and reinstalling fix it?

Any and all suggestions would be welcome!

Usually an un-install will fix everything.

Sounds like it has something to do with whether office thinks it is registered or not which may be a registry setting that won't get blown away by the typical uninstall.

Not having any real ideas of what is the cause I would...

Download and install Eusing, a free registry cleaner.

Uninstall Office 2007 Reboot.

Clean the Registry.

Reboot.

Install Office 2007.

That is of course assuming someone doesn't really know what is going on.

Well, Lameid,

I did as you suggested. I had a devil of a time re-installing Office 2007. It gave me a permissions error, that access was denied to a registry file. Anyhow, I tried to reinstall as administrator and got the same error 1402 message.

I then logged onto the OS as Administrator, and this installed the program okay.

BUT...I am still getting the User Name nag screen!

It could be perhaps that during uninstall, the user info registry file failed to delete, even after using Eusing. In fact, Eusing said, after fixing, that some files may have been locked and hence inaccessible.

Not that I want to re-do this process, but perhaps if I uninstalled Office, logged on as Administrator, the offending registry file would be deleted. I am not sure.

Is there no workaround that you know of, no setting within Office, that would remove the nag screen?

I can, of course, live with this sign-in screen upon opening Word documents.

Thanks for your help. The issue remains unresolved.

Hello, robmazco,

When trying to create a new key, I get the hideous sound and the red X, stating: "Cannot create key: you do not have the requisite permissions to create a new key under UserInfo."

And I am not allowed to change the permissions. I get to the final step, and it says I am not allowed to save any permissions changes.

Thanks for the link. But, alas, it doesn't help me.

I would not uninstall at this point. It sounds like the user information simply can't be written to the registry.

I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to write to what I assume is a user registry key... If you can I would make the user account that is having a problem a Power user and see if that fixes it. You could even unddo the change if it works.

If that isn't it, I would post in the Windows forum saying that you don't have permission to modify the registry as a user. If you have one check with your network admin / help desk, check with them first. There are some obcure permissions that I'm not very familiar with.

Im thinking along with Lame here, it seems like it could just be rights issues.

Hello, Lameid,
Is there a standard (i.e., simple) way to make my account or the Administrator account (I am the administrator) a POWER USER? I have Googled this but do not know how to do it.

In control panel if you switch to clasic view there is the user accounts item. On the Advanced tab push the Advanced button. Hopefully it is somewhat intuitive from there.
