how to stop "print to file" in MS Word, XP Pro

there's a win xp client, that can't Print To Printer from MS Word (but *can* print to printer from notepad, test page, browser). MS Word help has been no help, in that all "print to file" and "background printing" checkboxes are unchecked (file -> print, and tools -> options -> print). MSFT help hasn't provided successful either. Any thoughts?
