Hi

This is my first posting here. We have the age old problem of some of our users not paying attention and dragging and dropping files and folders all over the network. Most of the them are using tablets rather than mice so this is where the problem is coming in. The server is running Windows Server 2003 R2 64bit, sp2 is installed and most of the clients are XP with a few Vista.

I have done a lot of searching and most of it relates to changing file permissions. We have a huge amount of data and also a colleauge tried to change the permissions before without a lot of success, so I think it would be better if we could get a prompt to come up before the copy or move is attempted. It's been suggested that we could write a vb script but I know nothing about it. Does anyone know of a way in Windows do to this or a 3rd party app?

Any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated.

You really couldn't do this. The one possible exception would be to utilize a WMI Event Consumer Script which is super complicated.

If you remove MODIFY permissions your people won't be able to do this, however then they can't update their files either.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Hi Mark

Thanks for your reply. I should have said that the users need to be able to create and delete files and folders so removing modify isn't an option. It's crazy that something so apparently simple is so fiddly to setup.

Is there no other options?

I suppose there are always options. One that comes to mind to me is to use an ASP web interface to access the files. That way you would need to program in check boxes to delete a file and moving would not be an option at all. The page would enumerate existing files and folders and dynamically present the data.

Another option is to move the data into SharePoint document libraries. You would not need to know coding for that and will gain version control on your files.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
