how to startup a computer with startup disk

my computer has crashed and when i turn it on it tells me to put the boot disk in.
after i do this it says a:>
what do i do know i have windows 98 cd and would like to install it.
i also have a 4GB hard drive.
 
type d: or e: (one of these will be CD-ROM drive)

at d: prompt type dir
if you see a win98 dir you are at the right place

type cd win98
type setup

there you are
 
Did you start the computer with CD-ROM support?
If not, you need to do that, or if that wasn't one of the options, you need a bootdisk.
Go to and get one for your OS that has cd-rom support.
