hi.
i am trying to start a logon script on a home network. i'm familiar with scripting (somewhat). the question that i have is:
1) after i write the script, where would i put it and how do i start it? (maybe in msconfig/startup?)
2) the script is supposed to
a) start a .exe program
b) select connect option from file menu (alt-f)
c) check for a particular wireless network ("wi-ptp")
d) connect to that wireless network
e) wait for connection and retrieve a .txt file from Y drive (network).
any ideas on how to go about this?
thanks.

refer to my FAQ for some guidance: faq329-5798

The wireless stuff will not be possible. You need to setup the wireless connection first, set it to autoreconnect and then you can have your script grab files across it etc.

Because of the security involved, scritping of wireless connections is not possible and that is by design to prevent security breaches.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

thanks mark.
that's great. i think i've seen it before here. i just couldn't place where i could find it. after i compose my script, where do i put it so that windows will execute it?
the problem that i have is that until the wireless connection is established, network drive will not be available. and i know, as you said, the wireless set up is by design GUI type. so, how do i get around this?

Need to know what you have to tell you were to configure the script. Do you have a server or not?

Generally speaking, login scripts should go into an AD GPO as detailed in my FAQ at the end. If you don't have a domain, and are in a workgroup, then you will want to configure the GPO in the local computer policy under login scripts. The path to that is the same as I detail in the FAQ, it is just local and would need to be done on each PC rather than centrally using a server.

You need to configure your computers for the wireless first. Get them to auto connect to the network, then implement your login script. There is a GPO setting to wait for network before apply policies which would include the execution of your login script.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
