How to speed up a spanned volume?

I have 5 200gb hard drives in a spanned volume. I know its the really cheap way to RAID but up until lately its been working fine. Lately after its gotten about 80% full (800gb) its starting to get really slow, sometimes taking minutes to view a directory that has alot of folders. Anyone have any suggestions for speeding it up?
