I have an Access database that links to an excel sheet (in a table format).

When linking from Access, it automatically selects the datatypes for the fields but it has chosen a number datatype where I need a text datatype as the field contains both numbers and text. The rows which have text are displayed in the Access table as '#num!'.

I have tried changing the properties in Design view but am unable to change the datatype for linked tables.

How do I make Access create the linked table with a Text datatype instead of a Number datatype?

Thanks!

Before linking the spreadsheet to Access, sort it in Excel in such a way the first rows contain the correct data. I had the same problem and I solved it this way.
If the first few rows contain numbers, Access considers it is a numeric field without checking to the end.

Exactly danvlas,

My trick:

ADD another dummy ROW to FORCE this - you can delete it after import.
