how to shrink the error log ?

Hi All,

we are running MySQL 3.23 on solaris.
The errorlog (<hostname>.err)is growing like hell.
Is there a way to reduce the size of this error-log
without shutting down mysql?
All the time mysql has a lock on this file.

Have you tried `mysqladmin -u root -p flush-logs`
