Hi..i'm learning to setup VPN server and client for my company.
Could anyone please explain to me how to setup VPN server (Win NT4) and client (win98/win2000 Professional).
I use proxy server 2.0 (sitting on win NT4) for my clients to access the internet. Will it affect the VPN ?

Thanks

I am also trying to setup a VPN network. I have a W2k server with a modem connecting to the internet and the NIC connecting to my LAN. I would like instructions on how to setup a VPN with this setup.

Thanks

Can't help with the NT4 server.
Windows 2000 server - goto Routing and Remote Access under admin tools. Configure server as a vpn server - only other thing you have to do is determine whether vpn clients will use dhcp from the server's network, or use a range determined by the RRAS. These are configured under the DHCP Relay part of the RRAS.

Have fun! - I highly recommend reading the help files supplied with RRAS.

Good Luck

well I dont know if I would go with anongod's route here is how I would do it.
1)go to INTERNET AUTHENTICATION SERVICE under admin tools
2)click remote access policies.
3)right click and go to new remote access policy
4)give it a friendly name
5)then set the protcols you intend to use(to set it simple just set up PPTP under tunnel type then click next.
6)then go to control panel click under network and dial up connections.
7)add new conntection put a bullet in accept incoming connections and then setup who can and who can not enter.

Client side
1)on the machine you want to connect to the network go to network and dial up connections add new connection choose vpn
3) set the layer to pptp
4 then try to connect

I am fairly new at this also but this is what I have picked up

For anyone trying to setup a successful VPN using PPTP or even L2TP, check out the following link (at the bottom of this text). This covers dial up, static internet(cable/dsl), using windows 9x, nt and 2000 clients and nt/2000 servers, or even a vpn firewall with built in software. What I have done is behind our checkpoint vpn-1 firewall, we have an NT4 sp6a server box, running IIS4(not required), installed RAS and the PPTP service with several concurrent VPN ports available. We are not doing PPTP filtering b/c it would disable http and ftp traffic to and from that box, and if that box contains a proxy server, yes, internet traffic outside of that box would come to a halt, so make sure filterin is turned off in the network properties of the TCP/IP protocol.. I have setup a static IP mapping in RAS instead of using DHCP because the VPN client connecting into the corporate network will inherit the DNS and name resolution properties of the VPN server so you'll be able to browse the internal corporate network. Its really not that difficult, security is enhanced with GRE but if you really want to step up security, IPSec is where you need to go..check out this link...maybe it will help answer some of your questions..

Hi,
I am also new to VPNs. i'm trying to set up one on WinNT. I am using DHCP. Would I need to set up an external IP address, and what would that be and how would i go about finding that IP address? Our LAN is using private IP addresses. Can I use that as the IP address to connect to?

Thanks in advance.
