have mysql control center and would like to connect to a remote server. However when I do...

File
New
MySQL CC Register Server (dialog comes up)

I enter...
Name: (leave blank)
Host Name: (I tried the server name/ IP address)
User: root
Password: password
Port: 3306

I then click on test connection and it closes the dialog and when I open and check the connection it shows up as mysqlcctmp_1 red box to state not connected.

Does this have a bug and not work or am I missing something.
Is the default port correct? I didn't enter a port number on the server when I installed don't know how to check the port number.
Thanks for the help.

think hostname here is related to your login/password and connecting FROM hostname/ip .

I have a localhost connection that is up and running...
Name: root@localhost:mysql.sock
Hostname: localhost
User: root
Password: password
port: 3306

this works fine so following the same logic I left the Name blank I think the connect fills this in...
Host name is the server name FQDN (or IP)
User: root
Password: password

It just closes the mysqlcc app and when I reopen it the connection is there but one I cann't edit it and two it shows that it is not connected.

I had the same problem. If you have not changed your mysql password, it is blank. Do everything that you are doing except leave the password blank for the first run. After you change your password to what you want it to be, then connect using it. An example:

Name: root@localhost:mysql.sock
Hostname: localhost
User: root
Password:
port: 3306

I am guessing that the application closes automatically because the password is incorrect. This should be addressed by the MySQL CC Developers. This is an error within the application as far as I'm concerned...
