How to setup cable conection without software?

I'm currently using Comcast High Speed internet service. In order to configure everything you have to install their 3rd party software which I can't stand.

I'm replacing computers right now and i'd like to set everything thing up manually without using the special software. Is there any software I can use to detect all of the network settings so that i can enter everything manually? Any suggestions?

BTW - Comcast uses DHCP to assign an IP. And I'm running Windows XP.

Go into the properties for TCP/IP and turn everything on to DHCP. You're online.

right except that shouldn't be needed if useing a ethernet card and xp. just plug it in and it should be online after your modem is recycled. if you are useing USB you would need to install the drivers for the modem.
