how to setup a trust relationship?

I have 2 domains, abc and xyz. I have to connect both domains in one network. I go to active directory domain trust in abc domain and added xyz in domains trusted by this domain. However, I got an error message that says "the xzy domain cannot be contacted."
I think there must be some settings I need to configure in DNS but I dont know the right way to do it. The domains are in production so I am careful. Can someone please help me here?
