Hy forum. Can some expert there tell me if it is posible to set wich server (logonserver,dnsHostName) authenticates you when you login into domain. Now you authenticate to DC wich is most free or is most near you. I'd like to say with vbscript "I'd like to authenticate to this server" if you understand what I mean. Thx for any help.

THX for reply markdmac. What about environment variable "set logonserver"??? Does this mean anything???

i seem to recal many moons ago in NT4 there was a registry key knocking around and windows used this 'lastlogon' entry to check that server first...sounds a bit wolly if you ask me not relevant in AD. i cant believe that you couldnt set it if you wanted to, would seem like an oversight from M$.

Using sites and link cost one can control this to a certain extent but I still don't see why you would configure a DC/GC and then not want to use it. If you are forcing a particular server and it isn't available, then you can't logon even though there are other resources available to validate logon.

I suspect that the need here could be handled with properly designed logon scripts, but I am reading into the original post and need the facts for the WHY this is needed.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

I thaught that variable "set logonserver" do exactly what I want to. But I was wrong. With command "set logonserver=DC you want to log" I thaught that you specify DC that you want to authenticate. But when I set this variable to specified DC and then check authenticate DC with script

Set objDomain = GetObject("LDAP://rootDSE")
strDC = objDomain.Get("dnsHostName")
Wscript.Echo "Authenticating domain controller: " & strDC

I get other DC, not that I specify with command "set logonserver". So I thaught that this can be done with some other way, but I'm wrong, am I????

In our organization we have 3 DC-s. 1 DC is very poor with hardware and has many other functions (antivirus library,.....)Remove AD with DCPROMO isn't an option, so isn't option remove other software in this server. I'd like just to discharge this server. I'd like to set other 2 DC-s as authenticating servers

No, the "bad server" is not GC. So the only thing to do is ti buy new server???

No problem markdmac, there's no better solution at all. New server is the best solution :)
