how to set fully qualified host name (FQHN) for sharepoint server

My server hostname is sharepoint and the machine is refereced from the internet as sharepoint.mydomain.com (DNS).

When I access sharepoint from the server machine, the url is

http://sharepoint:19405/default.aspx

. It appears that all the internal references point to

http://sharepoint

and not the fully qualified host name.

When I access it from a machine from the internet, I correctly authenticate but then it gets messed up because it is refering to

http://sharepoint

Q: How do I set sharepoint internal references to point to the FQHN?
