How To Schedule Shutdown.exe

well, I'm having a heck of a time getting the Shutdown.exe tool to work on my Win 2000 Pro pc.

I tried to schedule the exe in the Task Scheduler - will not run

So I used the AT command to schedule like this...
C:\>AT 21:07 "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\Shutdown.exe /L /R /Y /C"

I've tried several variations of syntax - sometimes Event Viewer log says "unable to find path" but it has never ran the shutdown.exe

I downloaded shutdown.exe and placed it in the above location. How do you schedule it ??

Try poweroff, a freeware which can run as a service. It only has a problem with locked stations

Usually I make cmd file and schedule it but there is no problem with your method.
Check shutdown.exe file access rights for account under which this task runs. Check also if this account have "run as batch job" user right.

Have you tried running the command manually first to make sure its ok?

The best way to test problems with scheduled task is to make sure that you have a syntax that works ok manually before trying to schedule it.

Now lets see if we can't fix your problem....

As you put shutdown in your System32 folder it should be in your path and you should be able to stand anywhere in your file structure and just type shutdown and it should run.

What version of shutdown.exe did you download? I checked the builtin shutdown.exe in Windows XP and your syntax doesn't match up and also shutdown.exe by Andrej Budja and again your syntax isn't matching as I can't seem to find a /Y switch on either.

So you need to check your syntax as on mr Budja the /C cancells the shutdown command.

So if you can point out which version of shutdown.exe you are using I could try helping you out with the switches.

Are you by any chance using the shutdown.exe thats a part of the NT resource kit?

I see it uses that command syntax you have used. I'm not sure if that shutdown.exe is compatible with windows 2000.

I'm using my 2000 pc to test the shutdown tool, because I dont have a test server. Want to be able to use shutdown on a 2000 Server machine .

The problem is that the Task Scheduler service needs to have administrator rights to run a command that shuts down the machine.

You need to open Service Manager, find the Task Scheduler service, and then click the LOGON TAB. Enter a local administrator accout user name and password here. Then click OK.

Restart the task scheduler service.

Try to run the scheduled shutdown again...it should work.
