I neet to set up a script to check the syslog for at least one occurrance of an event on a hourly basis. If the event does not occur, I will send a message to the logger.

Syslog files can grow very large. Is there a better way then to grep for the event and verify the timestamp.

Can you open and close the file leaving pointers? Looking for a better way.

Thanks

I'm not adept at Perl, but I can tell you this sounds like an ideal job for Perl, go ask your question in the Perl forum. Good Luck! Meekness: Uncommon patience in planning a revenge that is worth while.
