we have acidentally formatted the importatnt drive on our db server where the sql server 2008 .bak, .mdf, .ldf files are created. A little while later the windows server crashed and everything was gone. We retrieved some thousands of files by using a 3r party recovery tool..by connecting the hard drive to a different machine. When tried to restore these recovered files a message cameup saying not to restore the files to same locations, the restore operation may not be successful. At that point we copied all those restored files on an external hard drive.
We have all the restored .mdf, .ldf and .bak files related to the sql server in that external hard drive.

We now have a fresh installation of windows server and sql server 2008 and wondering how to restore the database back on this new installation. is it possible?
Please help!

If the mdf and ldf were shutdown properly prior to you formatting the drive, you could simply place them in the drive/directory you wish and simply attach it. If they weren't though, you would have to use the .bak file to do a database restore. I'd try the attach method first.

Thanx for your reply, but seems like all the files that existed on that server got corrupted. are there any 3rd party tools that can recover corrupted .bak files? i have tried few with no luck.

If the file is corrupt the data will be missing. There's probably not going to be anything out there that can stitch what is left of the file back together.
