How to reset VNC Password on BCM 400/3.0.1

find the tool: "vncpwd" via google or something.
enable bcm drive share on drive C and upload the file to the bcm.
log on to bcm via command line (ssh or serial) and execute the vncpwd.exe with parameter "/v:<newpassword>".
now restart the vnc service.

And keep in mind that if you ever need to call Nortel for something and they need to gain access to your BCM via VNC that your system will be deemed "unsupported" if you have done this.

If you have no plans to contact Nortel, hack away....

I am not sure what the above mentioned utility does?
does it show the password?
or
does it reset to something else?
Is there any default VNC password?

The purpose of resetting the password is to gain the access to BCM via VNC not hacking the BCM.

Need advise, what should I do?

It allows you to reset the password to something you know. The default VNC passwords are based on date and system ID and therefore change each day.

VNC access for everyone but Nortel disappeared with release 3.0.

That being said, just keep in mind that if you ever need to contact Nortel for support on the BCM after you've reset the VNC password, and they need to access it via VNC and find the password has changed, your support will end there.

If that's not a concern, have at it. There isn't really anything you should need to access via VNC that you can't do elsewhere.

biv343,

You seem to be a BCM Guru. Thanks for the valuable comments.

May be you can put me in the right direction:

I am not s BCM expert as you can make out. We are currently running on BCM400 3.0.1 and wants to upgrafe to 3.5 and then 3.7. We have recieved the set of software CD's with instructions. We have planned to take out the BCM Disk, create an image on new disk using Symantec Ghost on the new drive and put the NEW drive in BCM and run the upgrade process on it.

Here is the reason why i was looking for the vnc password:

I went through the documentation and verified the hardware/software prerequisites. Then I ran the upgrade wizard. Enterd the ip/login/password then it uploads the certian files to BCM and says performing system health check. Then after about 5 minutes it gives the error "Timeout waiting for initial information from BCM".

I posted this problem in another thread on the same website and somebody suggested me to use VNC and delete certain REG KEYS and try again.

That "somebody" was me :)
What biv343 said is absolutely correct. If you're using VNC access Nortel won't give any support for that BCM.

I've done quite a few upgrades and haven't run across that error. Knock on wood, the upgrades I've done have gone relatively smoothly, with the exception of a couple 2.5 to 3.0 upgrades that blew up.

Are you running the upgrade through the LAN 1 port? Do you get the same result if you run the upgrade through LAN 1 with a crossover cable between your PC and the BCM? Also, I disable my antivirus and firewall programs before doing upgrades - some of those programs can cause difficulty.

Appreciate your response.

Yes I am performing the upgrade using LAN1, did not try LAN2, did not try cross over cable either.

My Client PC is on the same subnet and running on Win XP SP2 with firewall/antivirus disabled. There is no web/ftp server runnnig on the client PC. Client PC and BCM are connected through the LAN Switch using the straight cable on LAN1.

I have tried this using 2 different PC's, one with win xp pro and other with Windows 2000 Prof but same results.

Again, appreciate your continued interest in helping me out.

How do you enable drive share, can't seem to find that in the manual

on the web interface goto "maintenance" -> "maintenance tools" -> "Enable/Disable BCM Drive Shares

When I have this problem, I use CMD prompt
ping xx.xx.xx.x -T this does a continious ping and then the upgrade works. I have had to do this on about 10 of my 60 BCM's.

The one time that I had this issue, the BCM lost it's default gateway information during the initial stage of the upgrade and I had to go into full-on recovery mode.

I would suggest the following steps might help you for the upgrade. I would first suggest taking a backup of telephony/voice apps and take a printed full system inventory:
1. reset the BCM LAN 1 IP address to 10.10.10.1/255.255.255.0
2. set the next hop router IP address to 10.10.10.50.
3. Give your PC a static of 10.10.10.50/255.255.255.0
4. Plug into LAN1 using a Cross-over cable.

If you still have the timeout issue, then your machine has some corrupted data and at this point I usually abandon all hope of correcting the corruption and move on to recovery.

The recovery process would then involve imaging a new drive to the same software level as your backup. Patch that new drive to precisely the same levels as the old one and re-enter the keycodes except any to do with software upgrades (hence the system inventory). Restore your Voice Apps and Telephony (telephony will actually still be there in the MSC). THEN begin the upgrade process again from this point.

This is a long way around to complete the upgrade, but it will ENSURE that you don't carry any corruption forward into your upgraded machine.
