How to reset the modem?

I have a NEAX2000 and the modem stops connecting on occasion. I was told that to connect a pc via cable you have to switch the top dip switch on the interface card to the right for cable and then left if you want to connect via modem. When I connect via modem it will work for a while, then if left idle for a few minutes will lock up (doesn't respond in MOC) and then won't reconnect. If I go plug in w/ a cable it works fine but dialing in still won't make a good connection for a few days? Is there any way to reset the modem? And is the info on the top dip switch correct?

TIA
Rod

Only way I know of is to reset the system, alternatively order a new processor. The dip switch info is correct.

Have you tried connecting with a modem through an analog line on the PBX and not via an outside trunk line. This will help isolate the issue from any sort of clock timing problem on the trunks.

Trying a new modem is cheaper than trying a new processor. :)

Since the modem is built on to the main processor card how are you going to replace it without changing the processor?

Ozzie is correct regarding the modem, however you can disable the modem amd set it for direct connection and then connect a modem to the cable and try your modem connection.

U.S. Robotics 33.6 Sportsters seem to work the best.

You are correct but if the modem is failing then all may not be well with the MP so if you have a maintenance contract, report the fault and insist on a new MP (don't give them the external option). Also to go down the external modem path will cost you for the lead, the modem and the use of at least an analogue port. I ordered a new processor just last week for a customer with the same problem.

Maybe the question should be asked - What kind of 2000 is this? How old is it and is it under some sort of maintenance.

The external moem IS a solution to this if the guy needsa help.

Think outside the box.

Not disagreeing with you. Just suggesting that what may seem the easy way out may not be the best way out. Or the cheapest in the long run. The point I was trying to make is that if you do have maintenance on the system, you should not accept the external modem as a "fix". The age of the system is also irrelevant if you have maintenance.

I used to work for the national carrier here and one tech decided to tell a customer his PABX was too old to be worth repairing. The system got binned but was later found to be covered by a maintenance contract. The customer got a brand new system free of any charge as we were legally obliged to fix it. We also had an old system whose power supply died and there were none available nationally. Again the customer got a new system.

If you don't have maintenance an external modem would be the way to go due to the expense.

Sorry, I was thinking the modem was attached to the processor card with a MAT cable or something.

Yep, still out here,
Its a NEAX 2000 ivps ? if my memory serves corectly (out of the office this week).
I have found that if I don't leave it connected for long periods of time it works better and if I connect via cable then switch back to modem it works again after locking up. These problems occur when I am in the office using a 4 digit extension to dial the modem. I read in antoher post that that is not reccomended so there might be the problem. The switch is not under service and I have ordered a new sytem to replace this one in a few months so I'm willing to live w/ a few problems till its gone.
Thanks everyone for the help.

PS: I work for Siemens (not phone side) so you get one guess as to who's switch I'm having installed ;-)
