I installed linux 2 weeks ago. Ever since that day i am trying to remove it. But the file system created by it, wasn't accessible by windows. So if I try booting from my XP CD, it say's "Inspecting hard disk" and thats it. It gets stuck after that. No progress in de installation.

Is there any software which I could use to remove the linux partition and format my hard disk to NTFS format

Thanks in advance.....

Hi, DragonPrince;

That really shouldn't happen, and I'd be suspecting disk problems, but let's work on the assumption that the disk is fine.

Try downloading a boot disk ( is one option), then repartitioning the drive using that.

Is the inspecting when you try to install?
Are you happy to wipe the drive?

If so prior to that, you can delete the partition and then recreate it.All data will be lost though.

Had the same with a USB thumb drive. Linux put a 2nd partition on it. Windows on can handle one partition on a USB stick. Had to use a HP utility to repartition the drive.

Most people spend their time on the "urgent" rather than on the "important."

You can always download freedos and use the fdisk from it. That will see all partitions (FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, all Linux Flavours). Use it to delete them and then reinstall whatever.

Go to Disk Management (right-click My Computer=> Manage=>Disk Management.

Right-click the Linux partition and "delete" and/or "format" first one, then the other. Piece of cake!

Ahhh memories, from what I recall to do this you had to use format /mbr to clear the bootstrap loader.

Download DBAN, and then NUKE the drive, it is sufficient to get it at around 10% (as it will take a LONG time to wipe the whole drive)...

Darik's Boot and Nuke

once wiped, XP Setup should be able to see the drive...

Now, if it was a DUAL BOOT situation, e.g. XP on one partition and Linux on another, then go and follow Wahnula's suggestion...

Thanks friends for the suggestions.

I borrowed a hard drive with XP loaded in it. Then i inserted de same CD with XP setup files. This time the CD was able to detect my drive with an unknown file system in it. Then I was a able to format it in de usual manner and was able to change de format to NTFS:)
