Hello all,

I'm not too familiar with the "guts" of a computer, but I need to swap out a hard drive from one computer and place it in another. Therefore I first need to disconnect it.

I've removed the power cable by simply wriggling it free, but now I need to remove the data cable (or SCSI cable?).

How do I go about removing this cable from the back of the hard drive? [It is a HP Vectra VL400 desktop PC]. Is there a switch or a lever, the cable which has a pink tinge on the right side of it and is clamped down and that clamps seems locked into a slot.

Hope my desription helps.

Thx

You wiggle the ribbon cable and the cable end eventually disengages from the drive. Probably better to alternate pulls from each end of the connector.
The cable end is a plastic housing which is a slide fit onto the drive connector pins. You want it to come straight out to avoid bending pins but it will take less pressure if it is moved on alternate ends and will put less stress on the cable.

Thanks,

By the time I read your post I had gotten the cables free. Like you had mentioned I used the alternating wriggle from side to side technique and voila, it did the job.

Thanks again! You learn something new everyday!

Purchase Teflon spray, either Slide-all by Bordens or Remmington's Rem-DriLube. With a light application cables/power connectors release easily. Great on HD scsi cables.

Never really had a problem with them being too tight infact just the opposite infact (so lubing is probably not a good idea)
Many "branded" PC manufactures actually use a glue gun and put a dob across the plug/socket to prevent the cables working loose in transit.

Funny, been in this business 20 years and can count on one hand the number of loose cables which occur if I assemble or have worked on a machine. On the other hand, had enough broken IDE cables, HD scsi male pins bend, about 4 power connectors with broken solder leads, smashed knuckles, a couple of nasty cuts. No less I have had to partially disasemble machines to get power connector off from tight spots ( as in Dell servers). As far as high density terminals, if you have to apply force to get a connector on, you have no idea if a pin is bending. Since using the Teflon spray I have not bent any pins or had to apply excessive force to insert or remove connectors.. and no loose cables. Seen a couple of connectors on "branded" machines glued; though if the machines you use are carried down from the mountains of China on horseback, I could see the need.
