When you install serial port devices and then remove them, Windows 2K reserves the COM port numbers (e.g: COM3). The next time you install a serial port device Windows will assign it the next available port number (e.g: COM4). The procedure outlined in this link
Problem solved. Actually I was trying to set up a printer server attach to the network where the setting up of the com-ports was a bit wried and I created a wrong one. I had it all done and the printers are running fine now. Tks for all your effort.
