I have a number of LTO carts that are currently marked "Private" because they, at one time, belonged to a backup set for a node that is no longer registered. I cannot re-label the carts. How can I "release" the hold on these cartridges so I can re-label them as scratch tapes ??

How to release "private" cartridge for reuse ??

If you do not need the data that are on the tape.
Can delete the backup set, delete backupset node_name backup_set_name .
Once the backupset is deleted the tape should go back to scratch. That is if the was originally checked in as scratch.

If the volume was not originally checked in as scratch, you can try the "update libvol" command:
update libv $lib $volname status=scratch
