Hi everybody,

someone asked me to reduce the size of a dump file because the hard drive is close to be full.

I can't restore the dump in the database and clean the differents tables by deleting the older record because :
- as I told you, the hard drive is close to be full,
- I don't know in wich database I have to restore the dump.

Does anybody know how I can reduce the size of my dump file ?

Tnhank you.

So what is in the dump file exactly? is it data that only exists in the dump and not the database? Is it a copy of data from the database?

The dump file is a backup of the data file and the log file. The database is used to log th access the website so when we backup it, everyday, we had the new records to the dump.

I would like to delete the older records.

ahh. ok now i understand, mostly. first of all. i would recomend doing the dumps in weekly incriment files with daily adds to that file. this will make for deleting them in the future much easier.

assuming that this is actually a backup file that you append to daily. there is no way to remove records from it. The only way is to delete the actualy file. thus the suggestion for the future. What is the file extension? is it a .bak file?

If its not a bakup file, what extension does it have? Have you opened the file in something like notepad to see what it is if its not a .bak file?

do you actually need to keep the backups? are they used for anything or is this just how it was set up. if its not needed, just do a new backup with the method i described, then delete the old one.
