How to recover data from DVD-RAM disc?

I accidentally put a DVD-RAM disc into my DVD-RAM drive on my laptop when I had Nero opened (my mistake). Somehow it corrupted the disc and now when I insert this DVD-RAM disc (without Nero opened) I get a message saying the disc is unformatted and asking if I would like to format it.

This disc has important installation files on it and I would not like to lose this data. Can someone steer me in the right direction to either "uncorrupt" this DVD-RAM disc or at least how to get my data off of it?

Much Appreciated,
Brontoy

I would definitely try some sort of data recovery software. I personally prefer R-Studio with which I have recovered data from hard drives and flash drives.

Vanka25, thanks for responding.

I got R-Studio (using it in demo mode) and it does not even see the DVD-RAM disc. I suppose since the disc is read as unformatted R-Studio cannot even begin to recover it.

Dim possibility that I am not using R-Studio correctly?

I would appreciate any ideas in helping me recover the data on that disc.

I seem to remember that when the mis-hap happened I got a message that the file \$Mft was not saved correctly. Can this information be helpful?

Thanks,
Horace

Hi Horace,

You could try BadCopy Pro. I used it on a DVD disc that was damaged during an electrical storm (forgot the disc in the drive). It recovered all my files when all else failed. The only drawback to it was all the file names were lost, recovered files were named by #,i.e. file 1, file 2, file 3 and so on. It was time consuming but at least I didn't have to somehow recreate everything that was stored on the disc. I've since learned to backup my backups which I keep stored offsite.

Hope this helps!

Hi Bob,
Thanks for the suggestion. I searched for BadCopy Pro and then emailed their support to ask if it works with DVD-RAM discs. The email came back as undeliverable (I re-checked the email address and it was OK). Makes me go hmmm...

Was trying to confirm compatibility with DVD-RAM before I shelled out the $.

If I get stuck with no other options, I will get BadCopy Pro and hope it works with DVD-RAM.

I concacted Jusoft regarding your concern. Here's their reply to me:

Hello,

Thanks for your interest in BadCopy Pro.

Yes, it supports DVD-RAM discs.

You may download and try the free evaluation version, and it will allow you to preview the recovered files before purchase.

It has a wizard style interface, and you may complete the recovery step by step. It's easy and fast.
