Hi - I've been having a problem with a users machine crashing and thought I'd try using the remote monitoring options on Win 2000. I've managed to get it all going ok but the log file it creates has a .etl extension and I can't work out how to read it . I've tried excel, note & wordpad and it just comes out as garbage . Any ideas?
cheers

This is a TraceLog file, and is not meant to be read directly. The system uses it to keep track of data for performance monitor. It's part of the WMI interface in Windows 2000.

To view it - you need the ResourceKit Utility "Tracedmp.exe" that will dump the contents into a text file, or a .csv file for viewing.

Nice of MS to provide tools to track problems, but you need to spend more money in order to analyze the results. ;)
Hope that helps..
