Hello Everybody,

This is my first question to this forum. I have two machines having same OS (Open Unix 8) on both of them . I have some data on HDD(IDE) of first system & want to transfer the same to the HDD (IDE) of second system.
I know that tape backup would serve my purpose but i don't have tape drive on second system.
I am novice to Unix but had lot of experience with DOS & WIN systems.
In Short :
Is there any way to connect HDD of Second system in the first system & can i directly copy data from one HDD to another HDD ?
I think UUCP could help me? but i dont know about UUCP? what is UUCP? Dose it allow data transfer between two systems having serial ports connected via serial cable ?

Any help in this regard will be apreciated

Thx
Bharat

Yes, uucp would let you transfer serially- but if these are both Open Unix 8 machines, you could just ftp from one to another.

And yes, you could move a hard drive, but that's not a good task for a beginner- too many places you could go wrong.

Thanks Tony for your reply,

Does FTP need to have NIC on both systems? I dont have NIC on either of systems.

Yes, ftp would require a nic on both systems. See the article referenced above for other ways to transfer data- though uucp is probably your best choice if it's regular transfer- if it's a one time, I'd download Kermit and use that- much easier.

You sure these are Open Unix 8? That's very new- used to be Unixware 7..

In OpenUnix 8 you just have to conect the second hard disk as slave on the primary bus and boot the machine.

Pay special attention to see if the disk is detected by the OS, when you get multiuser state you can mount the area from which you want the data.

Example:

the devices in OU 8 are /dev/dsk/c0b0t0d0sX, where c= controller, b=bus, t=target ID, d=LUN , s=Slice or partition.

if the data is on your partidion number 4 of the second hard disk you can use these commands:

#fstype /dev/dsk/c0b0t1d0s4 and it will report vxfs(filesystem type)

#scoadmin filesys ( this will open the filesystem manager )

On the filesystem manager you can take the option mount a local filesystem and you have to tell the system where is the filesystem that you want to mount (/dev/dsk/cxbxtxdxsx).

I hope this can help.
