How to read ARCserve database directly

I need to write a small app that can get the status of tapes & jobs in arcserve.

Does anyone know if it is possible to read the AS database (arcserve/ASO 2000) directly - either by ODBC or API etc etc. I know the data I want is there as I converted one to SQL, but this isn't an option on all servers!!

Why don't you just write an app that reads the log files rather than the actual database itself?
