How can i not have the link between duration and work on an individual task? Want to have a 4 hour task take place within a given week. Don't care which day it gets done as long as it is completed by the end of the week.

Task name is A
Resource is #1
Work effort is 4 hours

Start date is 1/24
Must finish by Friday 1/28

Don't really care which day it is done on. But do want to show (gantt) the range that it will done within.

Any ideas? I am sure that this is a basic question but haven't had any luck with what I have tried.

You could force it. Show it as a 45 minute recurring task each day (5) for the week totalling 4 hours.

What link? There is *ABSOLUTELY* *NO* link between duration and work.

Create the task
Set the type to Fixed work.
Set the work to the amount of work.
Set the duration to the duration.

When resources are assigned to tasks there *IS* a connection between Work and Duration...

For all tasks, after you assign a resource, the task is scheduled according to the formula Duration = Work / Units. For any task, you can choose which piece of the equation Project calculates by setting the task type. As PDQ suggested, set the Task Type to Fixed Work.

In your example, RBPM, if you assign Resource # 1 at 10% (.1 units) it will automatically calculate your duration of 5 days.

This is based on the Assignment Units field, which is stored at the task assignment level. (Do not confuse this field with Max Units - which is on the Resource Sheet).

I highly suggest working in the Split screen view - with Task Usage displayed on the top portion of the Window, and Task Details Form in the bottom.

To achieve this - First go to Window, Split Screen.
Click on the top portion of the screen go to View and select Task Usage.
Click on the bottom portion of the window and go to View, More Views and bring up the Task Details Form. This form will allow you to change the assignment units, view the task type, assign multiple resources, etc.
The task you have selected on the top portion of the screen is shown in great detail at the bottom of the screen. You can also "right click" on the bottom portion of the screen and choose other task details options - such as predecessor/successor info, resource schedule info, Notes, etc.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have questions.
