I'm making a new year's card.

In the card, I am planning to use a template downloaded from a site and add our picture to one of two transparent areas in the template image.

I know how to handle a single image (zoom in/out or color management, cut & paste, add text in an image, etc.), but I haven't tried to merge two images (or is it called "layer"?).

So will anyone tell me how or give me good online references on it?

Thanks in advance!

Are you sure the area you talk about it actually transparent or is it just blank (white).
Yes, you would use layers but you need the tranparent areas in the image that you intend to place on top of the template.
What shape it your image? Is it rectangular? If not you may need to erase the background around it so that it will sit in the blank areas of your template.
If it has the same background colour, (probably white) you may get away with simply cropping your image so as not to waste too much space in the template.
If you post links to your images I'm sure we can help.

Good Luck

Thanks for your reply. I've make it. It's transparent, and my problem was I didn't know how to move the picture which was always copied in the middle of the base.... gimp is too powerful to find that simple function. :)
