Hi,

I need to put an em-dash in an external text file. I've tried all the different hex codes and ascii codes I could find, but nothing works. Does anyone know how to do this, or is it not possible?

Thank you

If you're using word either:

Press CTRL+ALT+MINUS (on the numeric keypad) or choose Symbol from the Insert menu, and then select Em Dash from the Special Characters tab.

Then save as .txt

any special character can be obtain by using Character MAP which comes with every windows OS since windows 95 .
Specifically to execute such you must use NUMBER PAD not numbers above your alphabetic keys.
For character map of all symbols from ® , © to µ ¥ ¹ , go to Start > Programs >Accesories > System Tools

I must be missing something:

In external text files, I normally use % and then a number to represent a symbol. This has worked for everything so far apart from that I can't find a number that works for the em dash.

I tried the options in both replies with the number pad, but they still don't seem to work... What am I doing wrong? I just get a little square where the em dash should appear.

thanks again,

I don't know what em dash is, but if it ain't here in this chart - - guess you can't display it.

Another thing to check is the character mapping of the font you're using. If it ain't there, then obviously you can't display it! Regards,
