I couldn’t find this information anywhere on the internet – I finally pieced it together with the help of SBC/AT&T tech support – so I thought I would share it. These settings work for SBC/AT&T in California, but are probably quite generic.

The 2WIRE 1701HG router-DSL modem has two management screens that can be accessed from a PC directly connected to one of its ethernet ports. The default login (if you haven’t changed it) for the basic one they tell you about is 192.168.1.254. The secret advanced configuration screens are accessed at 192.168.1.254/mdc (management diagnostic console). Just enter those addresses into Internet Explorer and press “Go”.

Putting a computer in DMZ mode does NOT completely disable the 2WIRE’s firewall. The following procedure is used to put the 2WIRE into true “bridge” mode so you can connect it to a separate firewall or router, to set up a VPN network, for instance.

1. First, make sure you have your KEY, USER NAME and PASSWORD supplied by your ISP. You can find them by logging on to the 2WIRE before you change anything. Copy them down.

2. Log on to 192.168.1.254/mdc
Under “Troubleshooting” on the left, select RESETS, then RESET TO FACTORY SETTINGS.
(Takes a few minutes to reset – wait until the lights are done blinking). Your PC will show that you are again connected to Ethernet. From here on, only make the changes below, and leave everything else as it is unless your ISP gave you specific instructions otherwise.

3. Log in to 192.168.1.254.
On right, select “Run Setup Wizard” and enter your key, user name and password as your ISP requires. Click “Submit”

4. Log in to 192.168.1.254/mdc
Under “Broadband Link - Configure” on the left,
Set “ATM VPC Search” to DISABLED
Set “Connection Type” to DIRECT IP
Click SUBMIT, wait for reset

5. Log in again to 192.168.1.254/mdc
Under “Advanced - Configure Services”,
UNCHECK “enable routing”, click “submit.

It is NORMAL that LAN light turns orange (lights should be green-green-orange for bridge mode)
You will NOT be able to connect to the internet from the directly-connected computer. You must connect a firewall or router that will make a PPPoE connection thru the 2WIRE. Most modern routers can self-configure when you hook them up.
