Hi all,

I have just found out that my mail server is attacked by Spam mails, but I'm a new network administrator, so I don't have much experiences about the ways to prevent this attack. Please tell me as much as possible about techniques of preventing spam mails.

Thanks very much for your help.

John Thom

John,

Make sure you have relaying turned off in your mail server. As there are many different mail servers available you will need to check the documentation for your mail server to find out how to do this.

Thanks very much, but could you give me a few ways you have already done with your mail server, for example.
Any tips would be appreciated.

What mail service are you using? Exchange, Lotus, Groupwise, or some *nix flavor? It is difficult to get into detail without knowing that.

I add known-spammer domain names to my block list in Exchange. We get enough valid but unsolicited email at my organization that I can't afford to use the RBL blackhole list, and I'm not sure if Exchange can use that list anyway. Another way is to block the offending IP addresses at the firewall - almost any firewall will maintain a block list for IP addresses and/or domain names.

I just started looking into this issue myself as we are to implement Exchange next year.

I found quite a interesting website:

Hope it is of use!
