Need help, the soft keys on my phone do not work, the only thing displayed is MIC, and I can not get it to shut off or on, I want to have the soft keys display MIC, Headrest, Mute, etc... I have no idea how, and am not a programer, just need some help, on how to do that from the phone itself. The phone system is NEAC 2000IVS, Dterm Series E NEC.

This sounds like you have been assigned a limited selection in system programming. So unless you can program the system you will need a tech.

Not too sure how to assign that Headrest key. Sounds like a neat feature though!!
You appear to be describing the default softkeys for the Series E sets. These are actually built in the set itself. The way to enable these is to assign the station in CM 1217 (set to a 0)as a Series III which disables softkey support from the PBX forcing the station to enable the built in softkeys.

Cmd 1223 sets which pattern you get and Cmd 9A what is available for each pattern

Teaching some one softkeys is difficult. There is a default pattern (Pattern 3) which cannot be modified. You have to point the stations to a pattern number (0,1 or 2) that CAN be changed. Below is an exmple of ONE row of softkeys using Pattern 0 - you can have up to 4 rows of softkeys on any given state that the Dterm is in:

SoftKey Commmands
1223=0 and 1222=0

Idle state
9A00-0000-F1017 9A10-0000-4D4943(MIC)
9A00-0001-F5014 9A10-0001-535953(SYS)
9A00-0002-F5010 9A10-0002-434944(CID)
9A00-0003-F5003 9A10-0003-522D544F4E45 (R-TONE)

During Dialing - (Holding no call)
9A00-0100-F1017 9A10-0100-4D4943(MIC)
9A00-0101-F1014 9A10-0101-535953(SYS)
9A00-0102-F5010 9A10-0102-434944(CID)
9A00-0103-F0010 9A10-0103-464341(FDA)

During Speaking (Holding no call)
9A00-1000-F1017 9A10-1000-4D4943(MIC)
9A00-1001-F1091 9A10-1001-524543(REC)
9A00-1002-F5010 9A10-1002-434944(CID)
9A00-1003-F5013 9A10-1003-4D555445(MUTE)

The Headset key can be added in place of one of the keys in the previous example - in all Dterm states.
