how do i print the down arrow symbol

Try Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Character Map and select a font that contains the down arrow. Arial Alternative is one. You'll have to select that font on the printer object and be sure any computer that you send the program to has that font. Use Select and Copy to copy it to the clipboard. Paste it in a literal in your program. It will look funky in the VB IDE font.
