hello again

is there a possibility to print - let's say a basic report of project costs - to file? so that I could then copy and paste the values to excel to process them further?

You could certainly print the report to a PDF file, but then it may be difficult to copy/paste to Excel. Have you considered creating a custom table and inserting the fields you need? You can then more easily copy/paste the data from that table to Excel or Word.

The Visual Reports (Project 2007 and later) also create Excel pivot tables - would one of those work?

One other point of interest, this depends on which version of Project you are using. The Reporting tools in Project 2013 are a dramatic improvement over prior versions of Project. If you run Project 2013, I would recommend just creating the custom report within Project rather than exporting information to Word/Excel.
