How to prevent Excel formatting from getting lost when synch-ing?

Dear all,

I have exported a data sheet view into Excel from the Sharepoint site that I am working with. I would like to customise this view a bit further by adjusting the column widths and hiding some rows. However, after synchronisation with the Sharepoint server, the hidden rows are unhidden and the column widths are set to their original value.
Is there any way I can tell the system to keep my settings?
