I have seen a number of comments about "pinging" a website. I have a problem with https website and would like to see if a "ping" returned anything.

How do I do this? I downloaded a program which does http sites bt cannot resolve the https site from the same company.

Any help would be most appreciated

Go to Start > Run and get to a Command Prompt window, depending on your OS

Do a CD\ and from a C: prompt type in ping google.com for example, results will be returned.

while ping is always done from the command prompt (w98/Me: start>run>command ; W2k/xp start>run>cmd) antother access point is through start> programs > accessories> ms-dos promt. If you know the IP address of the site you want to ping you can always just enter it in the address line and get to the site ...unless of course you are trouble shooting and then you might want to use the tracert command to really see where your packet is going and where there might be a problem.

a ping is an ICMP connection - not a http connection. pings are purely about resolving DNS and checking an IP address.

a ping makes NO DISTINCTION between
- - - ftp:// -
A ping will:
- resolve to it's IP
- send a series of ICMP packets to that IP address
- wait for an ICMP acknowledgement

mick0005 - the program you have probably doesn't ping the website. It probably initiates a http connection to it instead (which is a more valid way of testing the website). I'm afraid to say that pinging won't offer any additional help - you should look for another program that will deal with https sites.

You may want to describe your problem in further detail - perhaps we can offer some help.
