How to pick up a color

I would like to pick up colors from an imported bitmap in Illustrator9 with the eyedropper tool. In the other versions of the software it was not a problem.
Could someone help me ?

Have you tried using a modifier key with it? I don't have version 9 so I can't say for sure, but I have a feeling it can be done by holding down some combination of Shift, Ctrl, Alt/Option while using the tool...
